300 miles a day. You must be a lot younger than me! And Sycophantia, that wouldn't be Gina's 30 miles from Dover, would it?

I'm 62. I did the Le Harvre - Treignac (380 miles) in under seven hours last year on a naked 900 Hornet and that wasn't pushing it so 300 miles on a comfy FJR shouldn't be too much of a headache. The mountain regions on the route are going to be more of a problem though.

If I find the right places to stay I'll try and spend 2/3 days at each stop to take in the sights.

F.J.R.
Just wing it mate & enjoy do'nt get tied down to fixed stops. You have enjoyed Tony & Wendys so make that a scheduled stop & work around it.
Little tip come about 4pm thats the time to start looking for a hotel so come 5pm you our booked in everything sorted nice shower & ready for a comfortable evening ie chill time.
Ive got my French/Spanish trip planned around the Burgundyfest so i will be popping in to Liz & Ians on the sunday morning to say hello to all the guys & girls.Staying in Troyes on saturday night nothing booked but looking for an Ibis near to town centre.
After that Le puy en Velay, via Millau to Carcassonne & down to Barcelona just winging it all the way.
Works for me mate only time it doesnt work is if theres a group of you & you all want to be in the same hotel.

I've never experienced the Ibis chain, what do you do about securing your bike. Has always concerned me leaving it out of sight in the open, even if chained up to something.

Hi John, aka F.J.R are you traveling alone ? or have you teamed up with another SEM'r ?

Definately reccomend the 2 wheels moorings as Baggy said.

if you wanted cheap end accommodation you could try F1 and B&BHotels they are in all major towns usually on the ring road or industrial estates but you get what you pay for ie not a lot.

Or you can try the Holiday Inn Express they have secure parking for an additional cost usually 6€ + and are available in each of the countries you are visiting. bit more expensive though.

www.bike-stay.net is still the best resiurce for "Biker Friendly" B&B's (though I am sure you will find them all Friendly)

It is okay just winging it but if you do you will not be able to work to a budget as you often settle for the 1st hotel/B&B you come accross, unless you are prepared to ride around asking Wink

Have a good trip m8

Thanks for the advice Tony, I'll be on my own and will contact you once I've worked out an itinerary. Hope you are both keeping well. Say hi to Wendy for me.

Most Ibis have secure parking for an extra charge of about £6.
Hi Tony FB4 short is travelling with us we will be passing through your area on 16th July so if you want to pm your number we can maybe tie up for a coffee.
Will be staying in Valence night of the 15th & then coming up the A7.

Yes its Gina's, but sshh, don't tell everyone, wouldn't want it to be fully booked when I want to go.

We are thinking of visiting the Spanish Pyrenees in August, anyone know any cheap hotels about 150 miles from Bilbao we could use for a base for about 3 days. Preferably in a small quiet town/village. It would need a restaurant/bar

I would suggest heading for Jaca. It's about 170 miles from Bilbao on the south side of the Pyrenees in Spain. It's a fairly small town but there are loads of hotels and other types of accommodation based on it being a ski resort in the winter. Also it's pretty well at the beginning of the N260, a windy road through the Pyrenees 300 miles all the way to Perpignan, and some claim to be the best biking road in the world (pinch of salt as there loads of good ones elsewhere but you get the point). And plenty of other rides as well - more than enough to keep you occupied for 3 days. Mind watch where you park - the local police are all over the place and it's 90 euros if you get it wrong! Hotel Romero1 is well signed and they have a great tiny garage for up to 3 bikes right next to the hotel

Pleased to see Tony and Wendy get plenty of good press. Riders Rest is well worth it and they are great hosts. And to Tony and la belle Wendy...don't think I'll manage to get there this year but hopefully see you next

Thanks Tony.
Will speak to Brian & see what he wants to do.
But A7 or A20 is really no different mileage wise.
Aileen would really like to meet Wendy again & chew the fat as they say.
If you can accomadate on the night of the 15th of July & Brian is willing to stretch his old legs a bit Wink bearing in mind i am younger & have a better seat (private joke) is Barcelona to your place a reasonable distance I make it just over 6 hours a little over 400 miles coming via Uzerche & the D3. If your fully booked no probs we'll just meet for a coffee & we can always stay in Limoges or somewhere you can reccomend

This year instead of winging it we have booked up hotels for the whole route to Austria and back. In england we are using Premier Inn Folkstone 2 nts, France using Ibis Nancy & St Dizier 2 nts, Germany Park Hotel Waldeck 1 nt, Austria Enzian 4 nts & Simonhof 5 nts, all planned with routes and run outs through the multitude of passes in these areas, also planning to take in Salzburg, Ice Caves & Hitlers bunker. Mileage per day going out & coming back range from 483m to 132m, 483m being from home to the tunnel. Must admit will be a change for us as we normally only stay 1 or 2 nts at any location and never booked. Very Happy

Don't mind me asking but did you research the route with the passes or did you already know of them.

Researched some, have done some in the past, however the majority that i am planning to do are new to me, klick the link below, it gives some nice pictures & video off some passes also search Hotel Enzian in Landeck this also gives some good passes to try.
